Gender Identity Crisis - One of the many reasons why you shouldn't take drugs not prescribed during pregnancy
I guess a lot of us are wondering why Bruce Jenner, the Olympic champion and sports hero of the eighties have decided to become a woman.
Well, the reason may not be far from what experts have to say.
According to Experts, Gender Dysphoria or Gender Identity Crisis as we know it, is not a psychiatric condition as initially thought but, rather it is biological.
The condition maybe caused by hormones not working properly in the womb during pregnancy.
During the early stages of pregnancy all foetus are female, because only the (X chromosome ) from the mother is active and much of the development that determines the gender identity happens in the womb.
At the eight week of gestation, the sex chromosome from the father which could be either (X or Y) becomes active and so from then onwards the foetus will go on to develop to become a boy or a girl.
If it is the (X chromosome) there will be a surge of female hormones working in harmony with the brain, reproductive organs and genitals, so the sex and gender are both female, likewise if it is the
(Y chromosome), there will equally be a surge of male hormones working in harmony with the brain, reproductive organs and genitals.
However in some occasional circumstances, the hormone that trigger's the development of sex and gender identity may not work
in harmony with the brain and reproductive organs causing differences between them, and the result of this would be that the biological sex as determined by the reproductive organs becomes one sex, while the gender identity as determined by the brain becomes that of another sex, leading the individual to be believe he or she is in the wrong body as they become aware of themselves.
The inability of these hormones to work in harmony with the brain and reproductive organs could be as a result of additional hormones in the body probably caused by some medications taken during pregnancy.
