Scientists claim that the 4-7-8 breathing technique invented by Dr Andrew Weil could help the majority of us drift into slumber land in under one minute, because basically we need to breathe well to sleep well.
This breathing technique if done correctly fills our bodies with oxygen helping us feel connected to our bodies, and slows the heart rate thereby relaxing us.
According to Dr Weil, this exercise can help lower our blood pressure and improve digestion.
Although this exercise can be done in any position, Dr Weil recommends that we first sit with our backs straight when learning the process.
The breathing exercise seems pretty straight forward,
- Place your tongue against the ridge of tissue just behind your upper front teeth
- Then exhale completely through your mouth
- Now close your mouth and inhale through your nose while counting to four.
- Hold your breath and count to seven
- Now exhale through your mouth
Repeat the cycle three more times and before you know it you are in slumber land.
