The leaders of the three main political parties in the UK recently got together and signed up to reduce carbon emission although no clear cut out plan as to how this will be achieved yet. Campaigners such as Greenpeace and Oxfam are campaigning to shut down coal power stations within nine years.
It is thought that coal fired plants are the biggest source of man made carbon emissions making it the single biggest threat to climate change and failure to close these plants would undo the works being done to tackle climate change.
However it does seem a lot of Governments are keen to hang on to the use of coal for as long as possible because:
A lot of countries produce coal locally with no need for import
Coal is by far cheaper as a source of energy than the likes of oil, natural gas, etc.
There is the guarantee of a stable supply unlike other source of energy prone to scarcity.
Coal production does provide jobs to a lot of people who might be left jobless should these plants be shut down.
