The Cannes Film Festival proved that they take their strict tradition that all men wear tuxedo with bow ties and black shoes and the women wear dresses and heels on the red carpet seriously by refusing entry to several middle aged women wearing flats at the premier of '50s lesbian romance "Carol".
A lot of film stars including Emily Blunt expressed disappointment over the actions of the hosts.
In defence of the Film Festival I'll say glitz and glamour give the red carpet its essence, they have an image they desire to project and its simple courtesy you respect the traditions of your host.
It's been said dress for the occasion and not what you are comfortable in. Reason you didn't wear baggy jeans and your comfy worn out t shirt to that interview is because you want to be seen as someone who is serious and means business, likewise the organisers of the film festival want us to see the people on their red carpet as graceful and elegant. End of story.
