The pilot of a plane which crashed October last year killing two people asked a friend to illuminate the airfield using his car headlight.
Pilot Richard Lewis, 76, who was unqualified to fly at night, and passenger Tony Cook, 79, were killed when the Reims Cessna aircraft they were travelling in went down near the Beverley airfield in East Yorkshire.
The two men were returning from a day trip to Scotland and technical delays forced Mr Lewis to fly at night despite no night flying experience recorded in the pilot’s logbook.
Mr Lewis held a private pilot’s licence for 25-years but did not have a night rating which would have permitted him to fly in darkness.
