A contract programmer faces 10 years in jail for inserting a 'logic bomb' into a spreadsheet that caused a company to keep rehiring him

A Contract programmer is facing 10 years in Jail for inserting a "logic bomb" into a spreadsheet that caused one company to keep rehiring him.  Logic bombs are bits of malicious code that disrupt the program when specific conditions are met, like a specific time on a specific date. David Tinley, 62, had been hired by a US unit of Siemens, the German-based tech conglomerate, to create custom automated spreadsheets. The company used these spreadsheets to manage orders for electrical equipment. He planted the bomb to force his employer to be dependent on him, and was discovered when the program glitched while he was on vacation and had to give employees password to fix the problem.  He pleaded guilty in federal court to a charge of intentional damage to a protected computer, and now, he's facing up to 10 years in prison, as well as a fine of up to $250,000.

Happy posthumous birthday to Florence Onyebuchi "Buchi" Emecheta OBE a Nigerian-born British novelist.  She was a prolific writer, who published 16 novels, three children’s stories, numerous articles and television plays during her career spanning 30 years.  Buchi received several prestigious awards in her career.  In 1977 she received the Jock Campbell New Statesman award for the Slave Girl; in 2013 she was included in Granta’s Best of Young British Novelists, and in 2005 she was made an OBE for her services to literature.  She would have been 75 today.

A Florida woman thought she was being scammed when she received a letter imposing a fine of over $90,0000 for stagnant pool and overgrown grass in her property located in Dunedin, a small seaside city outside Tampa. Kristi Allen received the letter saying she owed $92,600  in fines for overgrown vegetation and a stagnant swimming pool at a house she no longer owned and given two weeks to pay.

At least 17 people seriously injured at a car admiring  event.  No less than 17 people have been injured, some seriously, after two cars crashed and ploughed into bystanders. The crash happened on the A602 in Stevenage, Hertfordshire, on Thursday evening as hundreds of people gathered to admire cars.  The charity event turned into a nightmare when both cars collided with pedestrians. Footage posted on social media showed one car emerging onto the main road while another vehicle was passing at speed.  They collided, causing both cars to hit bystanders on the side of the road and on the central reservation.

The pilot of a plane which crashed October last year killing two people asked a friend to illuminate the airfield using his car headlight.  Pilot Richard Lewis, 76, who was unqualified to fly at night, and passenger Tony Cook, 79, were killed when the Reims Cessna aircraft  they were travelling in went down near the Beverley airfield in East Yorkshire.  The two men were returning from a day trip to Scotland and technical delays forced Mr Lewis to fly at night despite no night flying experience recorded in the pilot’s logbook. Mr Lewis held a private pilot’s licence for 25-years but did not have a night rating which would have permitted him to fly in darkness. 

At least 33 dead at Japanese animation studio

An arson attack at an animation studio in Kyoto Japan has killed at least 33 people.  One of the Fire department officials Satoshi Fujiwara said a further 36 people were injured in the blaze, some of them critically with many of them suffering from burns.  It is believed a man started the blaze that  broke out at 10:30am local time after he burst into the Kyoto Animation studio and reportedly shouted "die!" as he poured what appeared to be petrol around the studio.

The European Parliament has confirmed Ursula von der Leyen, Germany’s defence minister, as president of the European Commission. It was a tight race for the German as she needed the support of at least 374 MEPs and was backed by 383. Ahead of the result, Mrs von der Leyen said she was ready for another extension to the Brexit deadline, beyond October, should it be needed.

A criminal case of alleged sexual assault against actor Kevin Spacey out of Nantucket has been dropped due to  "the unavailability of the complaining witness." In 2017, former Boston TV news anchor Heather Unruh held a press conference to share her son's allegation of sexual assault against Spacey. Her then 18-year-old son, she claimed, was sexually assaulted by Spacey inside the Club Car Restaurant. Mr Spacey 59,  pleaded not guilty to felony indecent assault and battery, which he was charged with last December.

Judge jails 34 year old woman for nasty behaviour

A Mum has been sent to jail in Sunderland for assaulting a police officer and a social worker. The lady who has previous convictions for assault spat on the social worker's hair and the police officer's neck saying to the officer ' I will bite off your nose' after been asked to leave a substance misuse appointment due to her behaviour. The police officer said she was disgusted to be spat at and would rather be punched in the face. The offender Elise MacDonald was sentenced to a total of ten months behind bar.

Marijuana in recent times is no longer seen as just a recreational drug. Ongoing research is proving the medicinal use of marijuana to be very effective for the treatment of conditions such as epilepsy,post traumatic stress, and some cancers. The state of Pennsylvania in the US is adding anxiety disorder and Tourette's syndrome to the list of conditions that prescription of medical marijuana can be obtained. The aim according to the state's health secretary is for doctors to prescribe its use together with traditional therapeutic approaches. About 111,000 people are currently participating in the state;'s medical marijuana program.

Drinking two cups of coffee a day could prevent erectile dysfunction - Study suggests

This is quite an interesting study carried out by some professors at the University of Texas. The study used data from a sample of 3724 men aged 20 and above and found that 42 percent of the men who drank at least 2 cups of coffee a day which provides between 85 and 170 milligrams of caffeine were less likely to report cases of erectile dysfunction regardless of weight and level of blood pressure as opposed to the non-coffee drinkers. This according to the researchers is probably due to the fact that the caffeine which is naturally present in coffee triggers a series of pharmacological effect that relaxes the arteries and muscle thereby increasing blood flow to the penis. According to the NHS about half of men aged between 40 and 70 will have erectile dysfunction to some degree. To read up more on the study check out the Plos one site  .
